Volunteers are an important element to the success of CPH:DOX and have been every year since its start. Our volunteers are in every corner of the festival during the busy days to welcome guests and audience and be the ambassadors of CPH:DOX thanks to their enthusiasm for the festival.

If you like documentaries, events, busy days and international teams of people, then maybe CPH:DOX is the place for you to be. If you want to be part of one of the best International Documentary festivals in and for the world, then join us in March 18-29  2020 in Copenhagen. You have to be above 18 years old to join us.

We are a big, diverse and funny group of people that is working hard to make CPH:DOX a great experience for our guests, the people on stage, backstage and everywhere.

Depending on your wishes and experience, you can take on various types of tasks before, during and after the festival. Read more about the different tasks below. The Guest Department and Info Desk roles are both roles that you commit on them. For the rest of them, you can combine them (Mix shifts) according to your availability and preferences. Please note that we expect at least 2 shifts of volunteering at CPH:DOX. But the more shifts taken and especially on the same area i.e FORUM or VR, the more responsibilities you will be entrusted with, and the more you will be part of a stable core team.

In exchange for your free time, you’ll get free film tickets, which you can use to see films from this year’s programme. Moreover, you will receive a T-shirt and small treats for your generous help.

Do you want to be a Superdoxer?

As a Superdoxer, you can take assignments that require more responsibilities and you will play a more important role in our team. We expect 30 hours of volunteering, either before, during or after the festival. In return, you will also receive a letter of reference on the top of your free tickets, but mostly the chance to be an active part of the festival.

Job descriptions:

Guest department

Airport Welcome Team

They say that a good start is half the battle. Would you like to be the 1st person to meet and greet our interesting international festival guests?

Then, maybe, this is the task just for you. Your volunteer coordinator will provide you with all the necessary info, when and where to be, but as the name of the role implies, you’ll be at the Copenhagen airport with a small and dedicated team. This role requires only your positive attitude and a smile and good English.

Info desk

Would you like to greet and help our international festival guests to find their way around and feel welcomed at all times ? Then you will enjoy being part of the Info Desk team, located at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, the festival’s main location. We will need several service minded volunteers willing to commit their time and energy.

Good english skills are a must since you’ll be dealing with our international guests. Knowing Danish is a plus. You will be trained so you will have answers for every possible question regarding the festival. Since you will be trusted with more responsibilities, we expect you to commit at least 20hrs. You’ll have a chance to meet some pretty interesting people.

Industry Host

Would you like to get a closer look into the world of filmmakers and international industry professionals?

Then being a volunteer in the industry department might be something for you. Industry brings people together from different aspects of the film world, and we need you to be a kind and helpful host. It’s a must that you are fluent in English and that you are serviceminded, since you will be representing CPH:DOX.

It’s the place to be if you are interested in documentary and filmmaking and would like to meet industry professionals. And as a bonus you will get an exclusive chance to see talks, the pitch programme and the decision makers, which only people from the industry get to see.

Do you believe that good service creates a good experience?

Then we need your attitude & your smile to make great events happen at CPH:DOX! In the 10 days of the festival, we have many events – opening galas, happy hours, Danish premieres, etc. – which are an essential part of the experience we provide for our guests. Some shifts require fluent Danish, but there’s a shift for everyone. The most important thing is to be service-minded and flexible. You will have to make sure that the event runs smoothly, the place is clean and tidy and the glasses are full – whatever help is needed in the moment. But you won’t be alone. After acing your event coordination skills at CPH:DOX you will organize any social event like it’s a piece of cake.

Venue Host

Do you like hosting and making people feel welcome?

CPH:DOX is a big production that takes place in various locations and over many hours around the clock. We have 3 main venues and are trusted with their daily operations throughout the festival. Making sure that it all works well requires you to have good organizational skills, be service-minded and have good English. You can give as little or as much as you would like and still be part of a dedicated team who takes care of the guests’ experience at the venue – where it’s all happening.

Virtual Reality Host

Do you love film, virtual reality and being a little geeky when it comes to technology?

Then being a part of the VR team would be perfect for you. During the festival, there will be many film screenings with virtual reality glasses at Kunsthal Charlottenborg. We need someone with good organization skills to keep track of the time slots for the different screenings and to answer questions people might have. We would like you to be service-minded and it’s only a plus if you know a little bit about technology.

Production assistant

Do you want to build up a festival from scratch and turn an empty room into a social cinema?

We need strong and reliable people who are not afraid of heavy lifting or other physical tasks to build up the festival center beforehand and take it down afterwards. If you are interested in event/venue production and want to learn what’s needed to make a 10-day international festival, this is a shift for you.

Would you like to take some shifts (and get free tickets) without missing any of the festival? By volunteering in production you won’t miss screenings and events during the festival but you can still help bring it to life.

Logistics runner

Handing out festival program, distributing the copies of the films to the cinemas, biking to deliver tickets to the other venues. These are fast and easy yet very important tasks to make sure the festival runs smoothly.

Outreach team

Do you want to be a part of CPH:DOX behind the scenes, and are you fluent in Danish?

We need someone outgoing and Danish-speaking to help the Festival Programme with reaching out to people and spreading the news that CPH:DOX is coming to town once again this March. Therefore we will need your help from the beginning of March, so you will have a lot of time enjoying the festival once it’s running (and you will get an exclusive look at what it takes to make a film and documentary festival)!

Become part of CPH:DOX’s photo-crew.

We’re on the lookout for new members to join us at this year’s festival. If you’re a firm user of a camera and ready to capture a full cinema or a dance floor in action – let’s get in contact. Please write an e-mail to Mie@cphdox.dk and include some pictures or link to projects you’ve previously been part of.

General Terms and Conditions

Welcome on board! Without the enthusiasm of volunteers like you, CPH:DOX would simply not be possible. We’re sure that we will have a great time working together this year, but to avoid any problems along the way, we’ve made a list of our mutual responsibilities:

  1. As a CPH:DOX volunteer, you are the face of the festival, so please behave accordingly. Make sure that you treat the festival audiences, guests, employees, colleagues and coordinators with the respect they deserve.
  2. As a volunteer, you will work at least 2 shifts. The shift duration varies but it’s up to max 6 hours. Depending on the job, some shifts may also take place prior or after the festival i.e general production and preparation. Generally speaking, we need your help from March 18-29. However, if you are part of the production or outreach team you will start in the beginning of March. The festival starts on Wednesday, March 18th.
  3. Your presence is mandatory at the instruction meeting(Big Info meetig)  that will be organized before the festival. Date will be announced in February.
  4. Each group of volunteers has a Volunteer coordinator who provides instructions and serves as your contact within the festival organization. Please follow your coordinator’s instructions. Each shift has a Shift supervisor who is the one responsible for your shift, who assigns your tasks, instructs you and gives you your free tickets at the end of the shift.
  5. Please remember you are not alone. If you encounter any problems along the way, don’t hesitate to address them with your Volunteer coordinator or the Shift supervisor.
  6. Please be on time, 15 minutes before the start of your shift. If you have to call in sick, inform directly your Volunteer Coordinator as early as possible (ideally 24hrs prior) so we can seek for replacement.
  7. The use of alcohol or drugs while you’re on the job is strictly prohibited.
  8. Before starting your first shift, we ask that you pick up your T-shirt and keep it clean and tidy for all your shifts.

In the event that volunteers fail to follow the above terms and conditions, CPH:DOX  reserves the right to take appropriate measures.
