In 2017, CPH:DOX was thrilled to announce a new partnership with Tribeca Film Institute to stimulate the art of short form documentary storytelling. For the first time at CPH:DOX we presented the IF/Then Short Documentary Pitch Competition!

IF/Then is a new initiative developed by Tribeca Film Institute (TFI) with seed funding from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to stimulate the art of short form documentary storytelling. Its goal is to discover and empower more inclusive voices in short film storytelling and to foster multi-platform distribution and financial sustainability in a global and increasingly complex marketplace.

6 projects focusing on female-identified European voices were selected for the pitch competition, which was held during CPH:DOX in March 2017. The winner was selected by a professional jury consisting of:

  • Amy Hobby, Executive Director of TFI
  • Oli Harbottle, Head of Distribution at Dogwoof
  • Riina Spørring Zachariassen, Producer at Bacon Pictures

The jury chose the project ‘Nudar’ by Rand Beiruty as the competition winner.

About the film: Nudar is a strong motivated character who is going through a period of immense change. Upon her arrival to Germany, as any other refugee, she is faced with with the many challenges of being integrated within a society that is very different from her own. However, being an unmarried woman without her family, she is faced with the additional challenge of finding her place within the refugee community itself. The film focuses on the emotional state of Nudar and makes sense of her feelings towards herself and her fellow refugees.

Riina Zachariassen comments on behalf of the jury:

“The winner is a personal story by someone with a connection to the community in which they found their protagonist and to the wider issue of mass migration in Europe. Through the intimate relationship between filmmaker and subject, the film allows a positive presentation of what migrants to bring to their new homes in the face of much adversity. Furthermore we felt this funding would make a clear difference to the outcome of the film.”

The winner received 20.000 USD to complete a short documentary within six months and to participate in IF/Then’s aspirational model of multi-platform distribution and monetization that offers filmmakers creative control, creativity, revenue potential, and career development.
