The ACADEMY CLASSES is an additional option in the shape of four different week intensive courses taking place during CPH:DOX on fixed dates from March 23-27, 2020. If accepted into a class you will join an exclusive group of international students from various fields and institutions throughout four days. The classes consist of group discussions, exclusive sessions with directors visiting the festival and specially curated film screenings in the evening. In order to create a concentrated learning atmosphere based on exchange and participation, the ACADEMY CLASSES are limited to 15-35 participants per Class. Participating students are expected to attend all activities and to actively contribute to the course. In order to apply you will be asked to provide a motivational text.
We offer four ACADEMY CLASSES representing four lines of study with a full day programme and specially curated film screenings in the evening. All classes are cross-disciplinary and explore the intersection between different practices by bringing together students, teachers and artists/experts from different professional backgrounds:
Dedicated to the field between investigative journalism, expressive documentary genres and contemporary political activism. Journalistic documentaries are unique in their approach to portray stories from reality. Armed with thorough research, the films dare to challenge established truths and explain complex relations while still telling fascinating stories. A common trait for the genre is the desire to not only represent the reality but to actively take part in it. With DOX:ACADEMY F:ACT we intend to create a forum for documentarists and journalists to meet, inspire and challenge each other in the collective examination of social impact through documentary media. Karen Stokkendal Poulsen debuted as a documentary film director with “The Agreement” (2014) on the border dispute between Serbia and Kosovo and the chief negotiator Robert Cooper. Her second film “On the inside of a military dictatorship” (2019) premiered in the main competition at CPH:DOX. Karen holds a master in Political Science and a MA in Screen Documentary. With a background in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she has taught International Relations at the University of Copenhagen.
A new and ambitious and creative forum for young aspiring film critics! Here students from various fields can meet, discuss and explore the art of writing about contemporary documentaries. What is the role of criticism in relation to the continuously expanding and changing documentary format? What are the different tools and techniques of cinematic writing? Getting to see a variety of films at the festival, the Class intends to collectively explore and formulate the tendencies, colors and networks of this years CPH:DOX programme – in collaboration with critics from some of the leading film journals. With the CRITICS’ CLASS we at CPH:DOX wish to create the frames for new and ambitious networks for film criticism. As a participant you will develop your language in creative writing sessions each morning before meeting directors and critics for intensive sessions and following a specially curated film programme in the evening.
Pernille Lystlund Matzen places herself in the field between curation, criticism and filmmaking as a documentary director, a cultural critic and in her recent position as art curator at the danish festival on nature and science BLOOM. Pernille holds a bachelor in Art History and a master in Modern Culture and Cultural Dissemination at Copenhagen University and Columbia University, New York. Pernille is editor of the Danish film review Skuelyst that will form a base for productions of the class after CPH:DOX 2020.
Oscar Pedersen is the co-editor of Balthazar, a biannual film journal that seeks to activate a healthy and ambitious cinephile culture in Denmark and engage in new ways of understanding and writing about cinema. He is a part of the film collective Terrassen – a new roving cinema in Copenhagen that engages with the social life of film. Prior to this, he has run a film club in a local Copenhagen church, and has worked as assistant programmer at the Danish Cinematheque (Danish Film Institute).
Examines the representation, visualization and storytelling of scientific research and will be closely linked to the science-programme of CPH:DOX. How can complex knowledge be transformed into a narrative that is intelligible for a broader crowd through moving images? How can the documentary method in itself be seen as a sort of research?The goal of this class is to explore and develop new and ambitious methods for science films and hence also new ways of collaborations between filmmakers, artists and scientific researchers. Across scientific disciplines and academic background this course is for students who want to work with film in relation to scientific topics and methods. In the SCIENCE CLASS you will experience the best new science documentaries and get to know other students and researchers who work in between science and cinema..
Note! students of the SCIENCE CLASS will have activities from Monday morning (March 25th) as they will join the “Science & Film”-sessions at the CPH:CONFERENCE.
As a part of the 2020 Science Class, you will be asked to present a project to your classmates. This can either be an actual production you are working on, a vision or a field of research you would like to put into images. This aims to emulate the Science Forum event where you witness professional film makers pitch projects in an industry environment.
While this is not compulsory, we encourage all students to participate as this can form the basis for discussions in the class and for inputs from the professionals visiting the class. This is a chance for your project to gain feedback and to enrich your experience with CPH:DOX as an active participant.
Daniel Oxenhandler is a filmmaker and cultural researcher. He is the Co-Director of the Collaboratorium – an open media studio and global research lab exploring the intersections of film, arts, media, science, research, technology and innovation. He has directed and produced a variety of independent film and video projects, ranging from feature-length documentaries and short narrative films, to short music films and travelogues. His latest feature “The Open Window” premiered at CPH:DOX 2019.
Examines the field between contemporary art / film and academic research, especially anthropology. The class gives the participants a unique insight into how international directors and artists create their projects today, both theoretically and methodically. There will be an additional focus of the experimental form of documentary as an artistic practice that test the boundaries of filmic expressions of the real. The screenings will be closely linked to the section of experimental films in the overall programme of CPH:DOX: NEW:VISION. Here, artist’s films and new forms of video will be presented.
Therese Henningsen is an artist, filmmaker and programmer. Her films Slow Delay (2018) and Maintenancer (2018, with Sidsel Meineche Hansen) have been shown at Chisenhale Gallery, Whitstable Biennale, Whitechapel Gallery, Close-Up Cinema, SMK Statens Museum for Kunst, among others. She is the Associate Director of Here for Life (2019) by Andrea Luka Zimmerman and Adrian Jackson. She is a member of the film collectives Sharna Pax and Terrassen. She holds and MA in Visual Anthropology from Goldsmiths College and is currently working on a practice-led PhD in Media Arts at Royal Holloway University.
Tinne Zenner is a visual artist, filmmaker and programmer based in Copenhagen. Her films Sleeping District (2014), Arrábida (2017) and Nutsigassat (2018) have been shown at a number of international film festivals including Ann Arbor Film Festival, New York Film Festival, CPH:DOX, Courtisane, Oberhausen, EMAF, Image Forum Tokyo and EXiS, and exhibited at museums and exhibition spaces locally and internationally. Her film Nutsigassat received the New:Vision Award Special Mention at CPH:DOX 2018. Zenner is a member of the film collectives Sharna Pax and Terrassen. She holds an MFA from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
Please note: The programmes for each DOX:ACADEMY CLASS are closely connected to the general programme at CPH:DOX and are formed after the schedules of the many visiting film professionals at CPH:DOX. For this reason applicants for the course will have their full day programme shortly before the beginning of the course. Expect intensive full day programmes from 10 am to 3 pm and film screenings all evening.
