CPH:DOX’s 20th anniversary will be celebrated from March 15-26 at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, featuring a unique monochrome interior design. Behind the project are architects Anne Dorthe Vester and Lise Birgens Kristensen in collaboration with designer and artist Birgitte Due Madsen and the three design brands Flos, PLEASE WAIT to be SEATED and &Tradition.
When CPH:DOX celebrates its 20th anniversary in March 2023, the visiting guests will get a unique design experience at Kunsthal Charlottenborg. During the festival, Charlottenborg will function as an international festival center with exhibitions, cinemas, industry activities and an interactive exhibition – which is brought together with beautiful interior and lighting from Flos, PLEASE WAIT to be SEATED and &Tradition. The spaces in the art hall will serve as a meeting place for many of the festival’s guests, who will meet up, watch films, attend industry events or simply relax.
“In our interior design, we’ve found inspiration in the monochrome universe, which gave rise to the study of light, shapes, textures and spatialities. The absence of colour allows us to concentrate on the influence that black and white have – even on a subconscious level. What is empty? What is full? Extracts of published documents from the FBI investigation of Donald Trump are used as visual references in the project. The documents show pages of redacted information crossed out in black. This shows the influence of black and white – suddenly the pages seem even more present the moment they try to remove it”, say the architects Anne Dorthe Vester and Lise Birgens Kristensen, who are behind the project at Charlottenborg.
Uniquely designed room elements and handcrafted plaster reliefs
The ambition behind the interior design project is to challenge and stage the design products from Flos, PLEASE WAIT to be SEATED and &Tradition in specially choreographed surroundings, giving festival guests a very special experience at Kunsthal Charlottenborg.
The decor consists of a combination of specially designed room elements and designs from the three design companies in dialogue with plaster reliefs by Birgitte Due Madsen.
“In order to create and stage more than just spatialities, this year we have invited Danish artist and designer Birgitte Due Madsen to participate. She is preoccupied with exploring light, shadow and tactility – through an austere, minimal geometry. Her work focuses on craftsmanship and materials, with plaster playing a particularly important role”, say Anne Dorthe and Lise.
Charlottenborg will be the headquarters for CPH:DOX during the 12 days of the festival. Everyone is welcome to visit CPH:DOX at Kunsthal Charlottenborg throughout the festival period from March 15-26 2023.
